Post Natal Support

Breastfeeding is the best thing we can do for our babies Breastfeeding is the best thing we can do for our babies

After the birth of your baby you need lots of support – here are some natural remedies you can use at home. All of the remedies mentioned here are safe postnatally and while breastfeeding; however, if you have any medical conditions or concerns it is important to consult a qualified herbal practitioner before taking anything.

Healing the perineum Bathe with salt water. Alternatively, put 1 tsp calendula tincture and 6 drops lavender essential oil in 200ml warm water, and bathe the area, or soak a cloth in it and apply direct as a compress 2-3 x daily. To help with pain when urinating, pour warm water over the area while you urinate, or urinate in a warm bath.
Healing a caesarean scar Use calendula or comfrey cream, or lavender essential oil.
Feeling low It is very common to feel low around day three, when your milk comes in. If you’re feeling very low, do seek professional help and support. Herbal and natural remedies can be very effective and won’t interfere with breastfeeding. Oatstraw tea and rose essential oil will help. The Bach flower essence Mustard is for gloom and depression.
Exhaustion Sleep when you can. Protein foods will help to keep you awake, while carbohydrate-rich meals will make you sleepier. Keep your iron levels up. Try Olive Bach flower essence, Oatstraw or raspberry leaf tea.
Adjusting to the change Having your first baby can sometimes be a bit of a shock, and requires enormous adaptation. It is normal to be tearful and tired at the beginning. Walnut Bach flower essence helps adjust to the change.
Stress Try chamomile, passionflower or lime flower teas throughout the day.
